Andy Mathers Started off the year a relative unknown in the A class, after being advanced from the B last year a
little unexpectedly the Newaygo native and long time “fast kid” at Big Air ended up winning 3 GLMX championships
in 2011. Now his sight is on bigger goals for 2012.
MI MOTO News : Well First off Congratulations on your Championships this year What classes were they in ?
Andy Mathers : 250A Mafia Series 14-24 and Open A Mid East
Do you feel you have improved more as a rider this year than in the past?
Defiantly, I have been out riding with a different crowd and that seems to have helped quite a bit.
Did you Finally get over the home track advantage at Big Air and now are starting to beat guys everywhere ?
For a while it seemed like i was stuck, just riding mostly at big air, the dirt didn’t get rutted up like some of the other
tracks. Now after riding at Tracks like Red Bud and Grattan that get a little rougher and rutty, I have improved my
overall corner speed
I hear you want to go to Loretta’s next year why haven’t you tried before?
No we went to an Area Qualifier on 80s and never went to the regional. I wanted to try in B class this year, but ended
up getting advanced to A so now I want to try to make it in 2012 in 14-24 and at least one A Class.
You were on a 450 last year and stated out on a stock 250 this year and now are on a team Babbitt 450 bike,
what one is better and do you feel better on the 450?
Actually This year I started out with a 250 and 450 and raced both classes In the spring then my 450 had some
problems so we ended up selling the 250 to get another 450, because it was hard to keep up with 250 two strokes
and mod 250fs. I think the 450 helped me out quite a bit later in the year, it fits me better.
Are you going to ride thru the winter or take a break?
I’m working now to save money for Loretta’s and bigger races, so I think ill take the winter off and get prepared
for 2012. I would really like to do some Pro/AM races and race new people so I can get my pro License.
Who would you like to thank
Team Babbitt’s, Big Air, Michigan Moto X, and My dad Craig for all the help through the year.
Thanks for doing this and I am sure we will catch up with you throughout the year and see how 2012 is progressing .
